The CAPLE (Centro de Avaliação do Português Língua Estrangeira) exams are an official certification system that assesses competence in Portuguese as a Foreign Language (PLE). The certificates resulting from the CAPLE examinations are the only Portuguese language certification recognized in the European framework. It is applied in the international network of more than 100 locations for the application and promotion of exams (LAPE), under the responsibility of the respective coordinators. At the Portuguese Language Centre / Camões, IP in Barcelona, we usually open two seasons for the CAPLE exams: May and November.
At the Portuguese Language Centre / Camões, IP em Barcelona, the registration period begins one and a half months before the exam date. The number of available positions is defined by the LAPE, so it is convenient to register as soon as possible.
To register, you must enter the CAPLE website, choose the exam you want to take and follow the instructions. The payment of tuition fees will be done by ATM or credit card. If the candidate chooses ATM, he/she makes the payment at an ATM or through homebanking. Once done, the system validates the registration. If the applicant chooses to pay by credit card, he fills in the empty fields, confirms that he has read and accepted the conditions and receives confirmation of payment.
Candidates who register for an exam must have knowledge of the standards for performing CAPLE exams.

Who can take a Portuguese as a Foreign Language exam?
The exams can only be done by those who do not have Portuguese as their mother tongue.
What are the Portuguese exams for?
The exams serve to prove one of six levels of proficiency in Portuguese. The examination levels correspond to the six levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2) of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) produced and published by the Council of Europe.
The six levels of the CEFR and the exams that validate the proficiency of the levels can be used for educational, social, professional or other purposes.
What exams and levels are recognized to apply for Portuguese nationality?
In accordance with the legislation in force, the candidate for the acquisition of Portuguese nationality must prove that he/she has the level A2 or higher in Portuguese.
A2 – CIPLE: Initial Certificate of Portuguese as a Foreign Language
B1 – DEPLE: Elementary Certificate of Portuguese as a Foreign Language
B2 – DIPLE: Intermediary Certificate of Portuguese as a Foreign Language
C1 – DAPLE: Advanced Certificate of Portuguese as a Foreign Language
C2 – DUPLE: University Certificate of Portuguese as a Foreign Language
Can my application be refused?
• the payment of the exam fee is not made within three working days after registration;
• the applicant provides false information about his/her identity.
Is it mandatory to attend a CAPLE preparation course to take an exam?
No. The CAPLE is not in charge of preparing for the exams.
I never took any PLE exam. Is it mandatory to start with the lowest level exam?
No. You can enroll in any exam without having to take exams of other levels. For example, a candidate can apply for the DIPLE exam without having taken the CIPLE or the DEPLE.
Are all the exams available in all seasons? Is it possible to take two exams at the same time?
No, see the page of each LAPE what tests can be done in each season.
It is not possible to do more than one exam per season.

If I can't show up on the day of the exam, what do I have to do?
Candidates who, on the day of the exam, are absent for reasons that are not attributable to all the examinations may, within a maximum of five working days from the day following the day of the exam, request the transfer of the application to the following examinations season, at the same LAPE. In this case, they must submit a written request, addressed to the CAPLE and delivered to the LAPE, accompanied by a document proving the reason for the absence.
The tuition fee cannot be returned.
